When it comes to the securing of a handgun that is used for personal protection in a home environment, it has always been necessary to balance the need for easily accessing it if needed and keeping it out of the hands of persons that never need it.  Thanks to state of the art biometric gun safes, this balancing act has become much less of an issue.

In the past, gun safes utilized either a keyed or a combination lock to operate the locking mechanism that allowed access to the contents inside.  The problem with the keyed locks is that you have to place the keys somewhere they can be accessed that is close enough in proximity to the safe that you can open it quickly if necessary and still have the keys secure enough that little hands cannot locate and use them.  Keeping this in mind, the combination lock eliminates that problem but causes the issue of being able to remember the combination sequence when placed in a stressful situation such as the belief that an intruder has entered your home.

Now along comes biometric technology.  This technology allow the safe to be unlocked through the use of fingerprint recognition.  In place of the old mechanical locking mechanism, the safes are equipped with electronic pads that recognize registered fingerprints thus activating the locking mechanism electronically allowing much faster access to the contents of the safe.  To activate the safe, you must first register your fingerprints by placing the fingertips on the attached keypads.  The unit will then store your information and allow only those registered fingerprints to operate the safe.

Most biometric gun safes on the market today allow for the registration of multiple sets of fingerprints.  This allows for more than one person to have access to the contents of the safe but, of course, keeps out the persons that you do not want to access the safe.  In addition to storing your handguns or other personal protection devices, these safes provide for the securing for any other valuables you may choose to keep in your home.

Of course, like any advanced technology, its early adoption comes with a price.  When these units first hit the market they were quite expensive.  However, as biometric gun safes are becoming more readily available, the price has dropped.  While they are still more expensive than the keyed or locked versions, the prices are now such that the average homeowner can readily afford the purchase of this newer technology.  In my mind, this is definitely the present day answer to the balancing act of gun security and easy access and I believe all handgun owners who take advantage of it will be happy with this new solution.
